RESUMEN

Post-mega-earthquake geochemical and microbiological properties in subseafloor sediments of the Japan Trench accretionary wedge were investigated using core samples from Hole C0019E, which was drilled down to 851| |m below seafloor (mbsf) at a water depth of 6,890 m. Methane was abundant throughout accretionary prism sediments; however, its concentration decreased close to the plate boundary decollement. Methane isotope systematics indicated a biogenic origin. The content of mole-cular hydrogen (H2) was low throughout core samples, but markedly increased at specific depths that were close to potential faults predicted by logging-while-drilling ana-lyses. Based on isotopic systematics, H2 appeared to have been abundantly produced via a low-temperature interaction between pore water and the fresh surface of crushed rock induced by earthquakes. Subseafloor microbial cell density remained constant at approximately 105| |cells| |mL-1. Amplicon sequences revealed that predominant members at the phylum level were common throughout the units tested, which also included members frequently found in anoxic subseafloor sediments. Metabolic potential assays using radioactive isotopes as tracers revealed homoacetogenic activity in H2-enriched core samples collected near the fault. Furthermore, homoacetogenic bacteria, including Acetobacterium carbinolicum, were isolated from similar samples. Therefore, post-earthquake subseafloor microbial communities in the Japan Trench accretionary prism appear to be episodically dominated by homoacetogenic populations and potentially function due to the earthquake-induced low-temperature generation of H2. These post-earthquake microbial communities may eventually return to the steady-state communities dominated by oligotrophic heterotrophs and hydrogenotrophic and methylotrophic methanogens that are dependent on refractory organic matter in the sediment.

EST analysis based on the megaclone-megasorting method was performed using leukocytes from the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) with or without LPS stimulation. A total of 849 upregulated and 384 downregulated EST clones were sequenced, annotated, and functionally classified. Ferritin heavy peptide I was the most abundant upregulated transcript, suggesting that LPS stimulation induced high production of reactive oxygen species, which were sequestered in ferritin. Among the immune factors, the transcripts coding for an IL-1Ra, homologs to bovine serum amyloid A3, and canine intercellular adhesion molecule-1 were highly expressed. Markedly downregulated transcripts of immune factors were those for homologs of calcium-binding proteins belonging to the S100 family, S100A12, S100A8, and S100A6. Time-course experiments on the expression of some immune factors including IL-1Ra suggested that these factors interact and control cetacean innate immunity.

RESUMEN

The Capitanian (Late Guadalupian) Maokou Formation at Chaotian in northern Sichuan, South China, is composed mainly of shallow marine shelf carbonates deposited on the Tethyan side of South China. By detailed field mapping and scientific drilling, we newly found out unique fossil assemblages and a sharp lithologic change in the upper part of the Maokou Formation. The main part of the Maokou Formation (over 130 m thick) is composed of algal packstone with Wordian-Capitanian large-tested fusulines, rugose corals and other sessile benthos, whereas the Uppermost Member (13 m thick) is composed of black limy mudstone/chert with Capitanian offshore biota (ammonoids, radiolarians, and conodonts). The topmost Capitanian conodont zones are missing; however, the Maokou Formation is disconformably overlain by 260+/-4 Ma volcanic ash (Wangpo bed) and the Early Lopingian Wujiaping Formation with plant-bearing coaly mudstone and shallow marine carbonates (packstone). The newly identified facies change indicates that northern Sichuan has experienced rapid sea-level changes in the late Guadalupian, i.e., first a transgression in the mid-Capitanian and then a regression across the Guadalupian-Lopingian boundary. As the end-Guadalupian is characterized by a global regression, such a volatile sea-level fluctuation, in particular the sea-level rise, is unique to the Tethyan side of South China. The newly recognized relatively deep-water late Guadalupian sequence adds new paleo-environmental information and further provides a paleotectonic interpretation of the low-latitude eastern Tethyan margin immediately before the end-Guadalupian mass extinction.
